Johannes Hoff Thorup hopes at least one of his big hitters will be fit for duty against Stoke City, after Kenny McLean and Marcelino Nunez missed the 1-1 Championship draw at Hull City.

Captain McLean was dramatically withdrawn in the warm up of the previous home defeat to Preston – after being named in the original starting line up – with what Throup indicated was respiratory issues.

The City head coach indicated after the Tigers’ draw McLean had been managing the effects of a viral infection in recent weeks, but scans had come back all-clear.

“I don’t think it’s something too serious with him. I think he just feels a little bit of pain, or a little bit of like something is pushing from inside when he starts to run and when he starts to get up to full speed,” he said.

“We took him for a scan, and it didn’t really show anything. We are optimistic that he can be around the group again for the next game, because he can function every day. It’s not like he’s at home, he’s in the club and he’s been with us for the last week.

“I think he’s frustrated that it’s still there, but it’s probably some, I don’t know what you call it, but when you have an infection, or when you have a virus, it’s probably those weeks after that where you’re not fully recovered from it, and you can still feel it a little bit and hopefully that’s it, so we give him some rest, and then hopefully he’ll be around on Saturday.

“I can’t remember the exact date when he was ill for us, but could actually still play, and he fell all right. But we knew before the Preston game that it was an issue so we were prepared.

“That’s also why Lunghi (Jacob Sorensen) was called in as that extra guy. We knew that Kenny was not feeling 100pc. It’s been ongoing for him, like a lot of the other players this season. Not only in football. There’s been a lot of illness going around, and for some it can take a little bit longer.”

Nunez was sidelined with an ankle injury at Hull after a crunching tackle against Preston.

“We x-rayed him the day after the game, and fortunately for us and for him, nothing is broken,” said Thorup. “It’s swollen and it’s blue. But hopefully, if everything goes right, it’s just a matter of days where it’s just full rest and making sure that he puts a lot of ice on it, and then hopefully he can be back in training with us, if not start of this week, then in the middle of this week, and be in.
